It may seem odd to have a collection of words and phrases from other tongues in this textbook. But, rich though the English language is, we still find that certain things have been expressed most strikingly by the old Greeks or Romans or by modern Frenchmen. In some cases it is not simply that other nations have found a better way of saying something, but that there is a sort of historical flavour about a phrase that disappears if it is translated into English. 'Life is short, art is long' is somehow not quite the same thing as 'Vita brevis, ars longa'. Here, anyway, is list of such phrases as are still in general use.

Basic Prepositions
