The ocean covers a much larger proportion of the world’s surface area than the land. The primary production of the oceans is of the same order of magnitude as that on land, and should thus have great potential for producing food. However, fish contribute only 5 – 10% to the human protein diet (World Resources Institute, 1994). The total marine fish catch has peaked
since the late 1980s at a level of 80 -90 Mt year, but for many species the current catch levels are not sustainable. Improved management can extend the total marine fish catch only slightly.
However, the good fishing grounds cover only a fraction of the ocean surface, which indicates that there is potential for increased production. Increased catches require increased nutrient input and improved nutrient efficiency, so research is now directed towards increasing the productive coastal and ocean areas through nutrient management.
