CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS'S VOYAGES
Columbus made some more voyages to the New World. He discovered some more islands in Central America. Spain was very much interested in this land, in this territory and had some Spanish settlements in South and Central America and in the South of North America too.
The second great voyage of Christopher Columbus began in September in 1943. He had seventeen ships with him. On this voyage he reached Cuba, but didn't know it was an island. Columbus made four trips in all the new world but he never landed on the mainland of North America.
England became interested in the New World too. The first English settlements appeared in America at the beginning of the seventeenth century. On the sixth of September in 1620 a group of people left England for the New World. They sailed from the English city Plymouth, on board the ship "Mayflower". They wanted to start a new life and to have no problems with the church.
After three months' voyage these people landed in the North-east of America. There were 74 men and 28 women on "Mayflower". They set up a colony and called this part of the country "New England".

RUSSIA
Russia is the largest country in the world. Russia is situated in the east part of Europe and north part of Asia. The Urals form a natural border between the two continents.
There is a variety of landscape in Russia: mountains, plains, valleys and hills. Russia is rich in rivers, forests, lakes which are very beautiful.
The Volga river is the longest one in Europe. It flows into the Caspian Sea. The greatest Sibirian rivers the Ob, Irtish, Lena, Enisei flow into the seas of the Arctic Ocean.
Russia occupies more than 17 thousand km and has a rich scenery zones: tundra, taiga, forests, steppes, half deserts and subtropics.
Russia borders with many countries: China, Korea, Mongolia in the East, Azerbaijan, Georgia in the South, Belorussia, Ukraine and the Baltic States in the West. It also has a sea border with America. It is washed by three oceans: The Arctic Ocean, The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
There are a lot of modern cities and small towns with ancient architecture on the vast territory of Russia. The capital of Russia is Moscow - one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
