Tom and Diamond Ring.
A 48-year-old named Tom Wallace bought a beautiful diamond ring, because he was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. He went to the office the next morning and left the ring at home by mistake. At lunch time, the woman, who lived in the flat next door to Tom, phoned him at the office and told him she had heard noises coming from his flat. She wanted to know if she should call the police.
Tom suddenly remembered about the ring, and without answering her he left. He wanted to take a taxi, but he couldn’t, so he ran the two miles home.
When he arrived at the building where he lived, he found that the lift wasn’t working there either. So he ran up the four flights of stairs to his flat and then remembered that he had left his keys at the office, but nothing could stop him now. He kicked in the door and rushed into the flat. Then he ran into the living room and found that the ring was missing from the desk. He looked everywhere for the robber, searching under the bed and in the cupboards. He was frantic. Then he rushed to the window and saw a man walking out of the front door of the building four floors below.
“That’s him”, he thought and ran into the kitchen, pushed the fridge into the living room, and heaved it out of the window onto the man down below. Then, suddenly poor old Tom had a heart attack.
At the gates of heaven, some time later, three men stood waiting for. St. Peter. To pass the time they asked each other how they had died.
The first man said, “Well, I was walking out of a block of flats when some idiot dropped a fridge on my head. What could I do?”
The second one said, “Well, I had to run all the way across the town and then had a heart attack from pushing the fridge out of the window of my flat.”
Then the two men asked the third man how he had died.
“Well,” he said, “there I was sitting in this fridge ... ”.

When Sara became ill.
Mike and Sara were married only for a year when Sara suddenly became ill. It all happened without warning. Sara just woke up one Sunday morning and told her husband she felt terrible. The evening before they had gone to the cinema. On the way home they had stopped at a restaurant for dinner. It had been a normal Saturday evening. When she woke up the next day, Sara said she felt terrible.
“You’ll feel better after a glass of warm milk”, he said to Sara, but she didn’t. She couldn’t even drink the milk, so Mike went downstairs to phone the doctor.
Now Mike and Sara live in the country far from town. Most doctors don’t make house calls, but because Mike was so far from a hospital and sounded so worried on the phone, the doctor said he would come out to where they lived.
Shortly after Mike phoned, the doctor arrived in his car. He was a big man, about 35, and carried a large, black bag. Mike took him upstairs to the bedroom.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to see your wife alone”, said the doctor.
“Oh, yes, okay”, Mike answered politely.
The doctor walked into the bedroom and closed the door. Mike stood waiting nervously outside. He heard the doctor say good morning to his wife and ask her some questions. Then there was silence. After a couple of minutes the door opened, and the doctor came out.
“Could you get me a large knife”, he asked, “a very sharp knife, please, if you have one?” Mike ran downstairs and brought back the big knife from the kitchen.
“Thanks”, said the doctor and went back into the bedroom closing the door behind him. Again there was silence for a couple of minutes. Then the doctor suddenly came out again. This time he asked for a hammer. Mike was very nervous by now, but he ran downstairs and came back with a hammer. The doctor went back into the room again and closed the door behind him. Five minutes later the door opened, and the doctor came out.
“I’m sorry”, he said, “but I’m afraid I need a large saw”.
“A saw!”, shouted Mike. “Shouldn’t we go to the hospital for something this serious? What’s the matter with my wife?”
“I’ve no idea”, said the doctor. “I’m still trying to get my bag open”.

Jim’s Two Jobs.
Jim’s father was the only butcher in the little town of Whiterock. His mother used to help his father in the butcher’s shop to serve the customers and cut up the meat. Then one day just before Christmas she dropped dead on the floor of the shop. Jim and his father had a terrible Christmas that year, and it was very difficult for the butcher to look after his shop by himself in the new year.
Luckily, Jim finished school the next summer and had to get a job. He wanted to buy a motorcycle, so he started helping his father at the butcher’s shop. After a while, he was very good at cutting up the meat, so his father sometimes left him alone in the shop when there weren’t many customers. Jim always liked to have his long, while coat nice and clean. It was a sort of uniform.
Winter came and went, and then it was spring, but Jim still did not have enough money to buy his motorcycle. So he took a second job, working in a hospital during the evenings. This job was hard work, helping to lift people out of beds and take them from one part of the hospital to another, but Jim liked it because he could wear a long, white coat in the hospital, too. He still thought it was a sort of uniform and felt very important when he was wearing it.
One evening when Jim was working at the hospital, he had to take a woman from her bed to the operating room. This was the woman’s first operation, and she was very scared. She thought of how the doctor would cut her up. It was terrible! Then she saw Jim in his long, white coat and remembered seeing him at the butcher’s shop.
“Oh, no!” she screamed. “Not the butcher! Don’t let the butcher do the operation!”.

Smart Guy.
One morning a well-dressed gentleman of aristocratic bearing accompanied by his manservant entered a jeweller’s shop in Bond Street in London.
The gentleman wore his right arm in a sling. He began to examine the rings and when he selected a couple of rings to the value of one thousand pounds, he put his hand into his breast pocket, as he wished to pay for the rings at once.
“Oh, hang it! I must have left my wallet at home. Here, Daniel,” he said to his servant, “take the car, drive back to my wife and ask her to give you the money. Oh, Mr ... just oblige me with a sheet of notepaper to write a few lines, please.”
The jeweller at once complied with the request, and the gentleman tried to write, but found it difficult, as his hand was bandaged and quite painful.
“No, I cannot manage it. Would you please write it for me?”
So the jeweller took the pen and paper and at the dictation of the gentleman wrote:
“Kindly send me a thousand pounds, via bearer – Theophilus.”
“What a strange coincidence,” observed the jeweller. “My name is Theophilus, too.”
“Ah, I am glad to hear it,” replied the gentleman while his man took the note and left by the swanky car outside the door.
The jeweller and the gentleman waited for a very long time, until the latter began to yawn and show signs of impatience, and after a further wait he said:
“I must go home and see what has caused the delay. Keep the rings for time being, and tomorrow I shall call for them and take them away.”
When the jeweller arrived home in the evening he told his wife that he did a fair stroke of business with a strange gentleman.
“Indeed?” his wife replied. “But why then did you send home for a thousand pounds?”
“What? I ... didn’t ... ”
“What on earth’s the matter with you?” interrupted his wife. “That’s your handwriting, isn’t it? And that’s your notepaper, isn’t it?”
The jeweller fainted.

The Power of Imagination.
Mr. Brown got to a hotel late in the evening after a long journey. He asked the desk clerk whether there were any vacant rooms in the hotel. At that moment another traveller came to the hotel and asked the desk clerk for a room too.
The only vacant room was a double one. “Do you mind spending the night in that room together?” the desk clerk asked. At first the travellers didn’t like the idea, but just then it began raining hard and they were too tired to go to another hotel, so they changed their minds. Their things were carried in and soon the two men went to sleep.
Suddenly a loud voice woke Mr. Brown up. It was quite dark. “What’s the matter?” Mr. Brown asked in surprise. In a weak voice the second traveller answered: “I’m sorry, but I had to wake you up. I’ve got asthma. I feel very bad. In addition I’ve got a terrible headache. If you don’t want me to die, open the window quickly.”
Mr. Brown jumped out of bed and began looking for matches, but he couldn’t find them in the dark, and the sick man went on: “Air, air, I want fresh air. I’m dying”.
Mr. Brown still couldn’t find the matches, so he tried to find the window. It took him some time, and at last he thought he had found it. But he couldn’t open it. As the voice of the traveller became weaker and weaker, Mr. Brown took a chair and broke the window with it. The sick man immediately stopped moaning and said he felt much better. Then the two of them slept peacefully until morning.
When they woke up next morning they were surprised to see that the only window in the room was closed but the large looking glass was broken to pieces.

At the Customs.
US Customs inspector Harry Standish arrived at Customs inspection station number eleven. Shortly before that, a red light on a wall panel near the centre the big Customs Hall indicated that an inspecting officer had a problem and needed supervisory help. Most of the passengers, who had arrived aboard Scandinavian Airlines DC-8 from Copenhagen, had cleared Customs and had left. Only this well-dressed American woman, Mrs. Harriet Mossman, who had just returned from a month trip around England, France and Denmark, insisted that all she had were shoes. The total declared value was ninety dollars – ten dollars less than she was allowed duty-free.
The young officer had been suspicious. To begin with, six dresses, all of good quality – had had their labels removed. The cut of the dresses was unmistakable French, so was the tailoring of the fur coat. The same thing was with three expensive sweaters. They also were without labels, and were unmistakable from Scotland, in typical British shades, not available in the United States. All this and much else customs officers learned as part of their training.
"Madam," Inspector Standish said, "is there anything else you wish to declare?” Mrs. Mossman answered indignantly: "There certainly isn't!”
"In that case, Madam," Inspector Standish said, "will you kindly open your handbag!” The woman protested, "But surely, purses are never inspected. I've been through Customs many times ... " "Normally, they are not. But we do have the right."
Reluctantly, Mrs. Mossman opened her purse. Harry Standish inspected a lipstick and a gold compact. When he probed the powder in the compact, he extracted a diamond and ruby ring. There was a tube of hand lotion, partially used. When he pressed the tube near the top, there was something hard inside.
He wondered when smugglers would come up with something original. Such old tricks. He had seen them all many times. He thought of the foolishness of Mrs. Mossman and the many like her. If she had been honest about the coat and dresses, and declared them the duty payable it would not have been great, especially for someone who was clearly well to do. Certainly her handbag would not have been opened and she wouldn't have been caught red-handed.

He Was a Philosopher
Time: 399 В. С. Athens.
Charges: impiety and treason
Defendant: Socrates.
Не was 70 years old,bald-headed, with an absurd pug nose andan unkempt beard. Не wore nothing but а cloak – no shoes, no shirt, no underwear. Не had the merriest of dispositions , no one had ever seen him angry or unkind. Не was very brave: he had served as а foot soldier in four battles.
He was а philosopher. Не did nothing but talk – talk to anyone who would listen to him, in the streets and marketplaces, discussing philosophy with students , sailors ог tradesmen, questioning men about what they believed in and why – always why – and how they could prove it. He met every answer with а new question, and each answer after that with another question. Some Athenians called him а dangerous idler who did nothing but engage "in irony and jest on mankind" . The Oracle at Dеlрhi had called him the wisest man alive, but Socrates, with his cool scepticism, said that his wisdom lау only in this: that unlike other men, he knew how great was his ignorance.
Не refused to accept а penny for teaching. Indeed, he was sure he could never teach anyone anything; he said he tried to teach men how to think.
His enemies hated him. They said he made young minds doubt, if not mock everything, and it was undermining respect for democracy itself.
Ноw did he defend himself?
"I shall not change my conduct even if I must die а hundred deaths ... . Death does not matter, what matters is that I should do no wrong," he said.
They voted him guilty. Тhe prosecutor demanded the death реnаltу. Under the law of Athens it was now for the defendant to propose an alternative. Socrates could suggest that he be exiled. But he did not. Нis friends wanted to smuggle him out of prison but he refused to escape. When his wife Xanthippe broke into hysterics in the death cell, he sent her and his sons away. Не spent his last hours discussing the problems that had always intrigued him: good and evil. His mind was never idle.
When his disciples saw him drink the cup of poison with dignity they wept. Тhе man is gone but the "Socratic" method of questioning and teaching has always bееn respected sinсе then.

The University of London.
If one is walking in the theatre district of London’s West End near Leicester Square and Piccadilly, and wanders along Tottenham Court Road toward Euston Station, on the skyline one sees an arresting-sight monolith among needle-like church towers. This is the University of London I want to tell you about.
In the early 19th century Oxford and Cambridge were the only 2 universities in England. The cost of education at these universities was so high that only the sons of the wealthier classes could afford to attend. But more restrictive still were the religious tests: only the Church of England members could attend. It was to overcome these limitations that in 1827, in London, a non-denominational college, – “University College” was founded. Its first years were years of struggle for survival against hostile forces of the Church and the State. It was opposed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington, who in 1831 opened a rival institution – King’s College.
In 1836 these 2 institutions, University College and King’s College, joined forces. Each retained the control of its own internal organization and teaching; a separate body, the University of London, was created to “conduct the examination of, and to confer degrees upon their students”. Thus was born the University of London.
The long reign of Victoria saw many and rapid changes in the University. Bedford College for women, Imperial College of Science and Technology, and many other schools and colleges became a part of the federal University. The famed London School of Economics was a newcomer on 1895.
Up until 1900 the University was only an examining body but in that year an Act of Parliament permitted to “provide lecture rooms, museums, laboratories, workshops, and other facilities for the purpose both of teaching and research”. This allowed the first actual teaching on any level.
Today the University of London is a federation of colleges, each largely independent of the British Parliament in academic matters.
The “department of Extra-Mural Studies” enrols nearly 12, 000 persons. In London there are 4 faculties of Theology, 13 of Arts, 31 of Medicine, 10 of Science, etc. At present there are 10 “Institutions” of which the Institute of Education, itself a complex organization, is one. All teacher training colleges in the London area – and there are many – are parts of this Institute.
Next door to the Institute of Education in the Mallet Street is a plain brick building, dull of exterior and in the daytime almost lifeless. It is Birkbeck College accepting for undergraduate work “only part-time students who earn their living during the day”.
For fear you should think that size is the only claim to fame, let me drop a few names associated, with the University of London: Sir Alex Fleming, Thomas Huxley, Michael Faraday, Sir Fred Clarke, Lord Macmillian, Sidney Webb.
In many ways the University has departed from the traditions of Oxford and Cambridge, London was the first to abolish religious tests, to admit women in England for degrees, to grant degrees without residence. The University abolished the requirement of English for entrance. The cap and gown are missing in classes here but the tradition of scholarship is strong.

Harvard University.
Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, by the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was opened for instruction two years later and named in 1639 for the English clergyman John Harvard, its first benefactor. The college at first lacked substantial endowments and existed on gifts from individuals and the General Court. Harvard gradually acquired considerable autonomy and private financial support, becoming a chartered university in 1780. Today it has the largest private endowment of any university in the world.
Harvard has steadily developed under the great American educators who have successively served as presidents. During the presidency of Charles W. Eliot (1869 – 1909), Harvard established an elective system for undergraduates, by which they could choose most of their courses themselves. Under Abbott L. Lowell, who was president from 1909 to 1933, the undergraduate house systems of residence and instruction were introduced. Sponsored by Henry Rosovsky, former dean of the faculty of arts and sciences (1973-1984), the undergraduate elective system, or General Education Program, was replaced beginning in 1979 by a new Core Curriculum, designed to prepare truly well-educated men and women for the challenges of modern life. Students are now required to take courses for the equivalent of any academic year in each of five areas: literature and arts, history, social analysis and moral reasoning, science, and foreign cultures. In addition to the new curriculum, the students must spend roughly the equivalent of two years on courses in a field of concentration and one year on elective courses. Students must also demonstrate competence in writing, mathematics, and a foreign language.
From its earliest days Harvard established and maintained a tradition of academic excellence and the training of citizens for national public service. Among many notable alumni are the religious leaders Increase Mather and Cotton Mather; the philosopher and psychologist William James; and men of letters such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Robert Frost, and T. S. Eliot. Most of the US presidents have attended Harvard.
Harvard College, the University’s oldest division, offers undergraduate courses for men and women, leading to a bachelor of arts degree granted by the university. In 1975, Harvard abolished the quota limiting the number of women students. With admission criteria ranking among the most selective in the United States, Harvard accepts less than 20 percent of all applicants.
During their freshman year, students live in halls within Harvard Yard, a walled enclosure containing several structures from the early 18th century now used as dormitories, dining facilities, libraries, and classrooms. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors live in the 12 residences known as houses. Named in honour of a distinguished alumnus or administrator, each house accommodates approximately 350 students and a group of faculty members who provide individual instruction as tutors; social exchange between students and teachers is thus fostered. Each house also has a library and sponsors cultural activities and intramural athletics. Undergraduate life has the additional attraction of proximity to Boston.
The Harvard campus is also the site of several renowned museums and collections, among them the Fogg Museum, distinguished for its European and American paintings, sculpture, and prints; the Botanical Museum; and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
Harvard’s library system is the oldest in the USA. The central library collection, used for advanced scholarly research, is housed in the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library. Augmented by the Houghton Library of rare books and manuscripts, the undergraduate Lamont, Cabot, and Hilles libraries, and the separate house and departmental libraries, as well as by the graduate schools’ collections, the complex forms the world’s largest university library system. It currently contains more than 13 million volumes, manuscripts, and microfilms.

University College Galway.
Galway city, though among the fastest growing cities in Western Europe in recent decades, remains a compact and intimate city of about 55, 000 people, set at mid-point on the western coast of Ireland, facing out onto the Atlantic. Galway is acknowledged – by Irish and overseas commentators alike – as an ideal University city. Its narrow medieval streets combine with dynamic new commercial and service outlets.
Its lively arts scene (the annual Galway Arts Festival being among the most exciting and highly regarded on the European festival calendar) owes much to the intimate and harmonious relationship between town and gown. In the arts, as in the industrial, commercial, social and sporting life of the region, the university has a pivotal role that is recognized and welcomed by civic and community leaders.
The Irish language is widely used with English in the city and, of course, in the predominantly Irish-speaking districts in Galway’s hinterland. But it is not uncommon to hear many languages spoken by visitors in the streets of Galway (including students from over 50 countries who attend courses in the university).
Respect for traditional culture combines with a confident embrace of the new frontiers of science and technology and new ideas in all branches of learning. It is this confident fusion between the old and the new, between the traditional and the radically different, which gives Galway its unique edge as a University city.
Galway has been an internationally renowned centre of higher education since the early 17th century. University College Galway has celebrated its 150th birthday. Its first name was Queen’s College Galway.
And while the College can look back on a history of great achievement by its staff and its students, it must also look forward to the needs of its future students. These will be mobile young Europeans and other citizens of the world who will rightly demand an environment in which their minds can develop and their intellects will be stretched to the full. They will demand that at the end of their period of study the qualifications earned will be recognized as being of high international standard.
These are all factors, which University College Galway bears in mind when recruiting its staff and planning its physical infrastructure. Thus, staff in each of its seven faculties has been expanded in recent years. New physical resources have been provided for the Library, Information Technology, Applied Languages, Business Studies, Marine Science, Clinical Science, Biotechnology and student housing.
University College Galway has a wide range of links with educational institutions throughout the world. Staff members participate in collaborative research and teaching projects and exchanges with colleagues in other countries. Many Galway graduates continue their studies at overseas institutions and each year the College enrols visiting students from many countries.

The guilt or innocence of persons charged with an offence against the criminal law is a matter to be decided in a court of justice. There are two methods of trying persons accused of criminal offences. One is by judge and jury in the Crown Court after committal for trial on an indictment; the other is summarily by a magistrates’ court without a jury. With very few exceptions, all criminal proceedings in the Crown Court begin in a magistrates’ court.
A magistrates’ court is normally composed of two or more justices of the peace, but the number must not exceed seven. Some statutes permit particular offences to be tried by a single justice but such instances are rare. The normal sittings of a
