The Wind

R. L. Stevenson

I saw you toss the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky.
And all round I heard you pass
Like ladies’ skirts across the grass.
Oh, wind, a-blowing all day long,
Oh, wind, that sings so loud a song!
I saw the different things you did.
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all.
O wind, a-blowing all day long!
O wind, that sings so loud a song!

When you know your heart can break?

Advantages of the Internet

1. Faster Communication
The Internet is the greatest means of communication. Innovations are only making it faster and more reliable. Today, we can initiate real-time communication with someone who is far away. For more personal and interactive communication, it is possible to avail the facilities of video conferencing, chat and messaging services. With the help of these services, the geographically fragmented countries have come together to form a community that is able to share its thoughts on global issues, that affect everyone. The Internet has given us a common platform and medium to explore other cultures and ideologies.

2. Abundant Information Resources
The Internet offers knowledge on any given topic. Search engines make information accessible on various subject matters such as government law and services, trade fairs and conferences, market information, innovations and technical support, and even advice on love and relationship matters. It has become common practice to seek web assistance in order to find resources for homework, office presentations, and research.

3. Education
The Internet has become an essential source of getting knowledge, both via free and paid services. The credibility of this form of education is still problematic and depends on the quality and authenticity of content presented by each website. The entire scope of homeschooling has expanded because of increased accessibility to videos of teachers giving lectures, showing diagrams and explaining concepts. There are also sites like Wikipedia and TeacherTube sharing information, instructional videos and content for teachers and students. Although Skype is a commercial product, its free version is being used with increasing frequency in global education projects.

4. Entertainment for Everyone
Entertainment is one of the main reasons for surfing the Web. Finding the latest updates about celebrities and exploring lifestyle websites have become day-to-day activities of many Internet consumers. On the other hand, even celebrities are using the Internet effectively for promoting themselves and for keeping their fans happy. There are numerous games that can be downloaded. Indeed, online gaming has achieved dramatic and phenomenal popularity because of ever-increasing demand throughout the world.

5. Social Networking and Staying Connected
One cannot imagine a social life without Facebook or Twitter. These portals have become the means of staying in touch with friends and family and not losing track of the current events.
Apart from finding long-lost friends, the Internet also makes it easier to search and apply for jobs and get ample business opportunities. Besides, there are public chat rooms where users can meet new people. For those who are single, the Internet also provides the option to select a suitable dating partner through secure online profiles, which can be filtered as per your personal interests and preferences.

6. Online Services and E-commerce
Thanks to numerous monetary services, we can carry out all our financial transactions online. We can book tickets for a movie, transfer funds, pay utility bills and taxes without having to leave our homes or offices. Travel websites, for instance, offer quick booking schemes and plan itineraries according to their clients’ likes. E-commerce is used for all types of business deals that involve the transfer of money through the Internet. E-commerce, with its variety of products and services, makes it possible to have the clients’ orders delivered directly to their homes. Websites such as eBay allow customers to bid, buy, sell, and even auction products online.

Disadvantages of the Internet

1. Theft of Personal Information
The use of Internet for banking, social networking, or other services, often makes our personal information vulnerable to theft. There are no fail-proof ways of securing names, account numbers, addresses, photos, and credit card numbers from being stolen or misused by thieving websites and individuals. Needless to say, the damage caused by having our identities misused and our accounts broken into, is often irreparable and embarrassing.

2. Spamming
Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails, which serve no purpose and obstruct the computer system. Such illegal activities can be very frustrating as it makes it slower to access our email accounts and makes the entire service unreliable for consumers.

Spammers usually use bots that bombard the receiver with an endless line of advertisements. This can prove to be increasingly perplexing, as it keeps getting mixed with our more important emails. Fortunately, email service providers often have security systems to guard against spamming.

3. Malware Threats
One of the most annoying problems with the Internet is the ease with which any malware can infect computers. Internet users are often plagued by virus attacks that harm their computers and important files. Virus programmes are inconspicuous and may get activated simply by clicking a seemingly harmless link. Computers connected to the Internet are extremely prone to IP targeted virus attacks that may end up crashing the system completely.

4. Age-inappropriate Content
Pornography and age-inappropriate content is perhaps the biggest disadvantage of the Internet. The Internet makes uploading shocking content so easy, that we end up coming across inappropriate words and images even while surfing educational sites. All that parents can do, is lock harmful sites and monitor the sites viewed by their children.

5. Social Isolation, Obesity, and Depression
The biggest problem with having the Internet is its ability to create rifts between the real and virtual world. The virtual world can often seem so alluring that once hooked, going back to real life seems daunting. There is addiction to everything that pertains to the web and that includes excessive surfing, online gambling, social networking, and gaming addiction. There are now psychiatric clinics and doctors that specifically resolve problems created by the Internet. These addictions cause both physical and mental disorders that can lead to health complications if left unattended.

If you have a lot of money

The theatrical trailer is often the first chance to promote a movie to its target audience. Starting up to a year before the release of a major studio movie, distributors run movie trailers that are meticulously edited and audience-tested. The idea is to give moviegoers a taste of the laughs, special effects and plot twists of the studio’s upcoming releases, while leaving them wanting more. It’s an art form that’s usually handled by special trailer production houses.

About the same time that the first trailers hit the theaters, the movie studio will unveil an official Web site for the film. Typical movie Web sites allow visitors to view multiple versions of the trailer, watch behind-the-scenes interviews and mini-documentaries, read plot synopses, download cell-phone ringtones and desktop wallpaper, play games, chat in forums and even pre-order tickets. The official movie Web site is only the beginning of a much larger Internet marketing campaign.

As the release date of the film draws closer, movie marketers try to get early favorable press coverage in newspapers, magazines and on entertainment TV shows. The main movie publicity tactic is something called a press junket. At a press junket, journalists, entertainment reporters and movie critics are flown out to a special location for a day or weekend of interviews with the stars and creators of the film. The actors, directors and screenwriters sit in separate rooms and the reporters are brought in one by one to ask their questions.

Weeks before the movie opens nationwide, the promotions department starts an all-out publicity blitz. The idea is to bombard the public with so many images and promos for the movie that it becomes a "can’t miss" event. Movie marketers will plaster the sides of buses with huge ads, place billboards all around the city, run tons of teaser trailers on TV, place full-page ads in major newspapers and magazines, and the movie’s stars will show up on all of the major talk shows.

The Internet is proving to be a prime spot for these publicity blitzes. Promoters can place rich, interactive ads on the Web sites most trafficked by their target audience. They can also release behind-the-scenes clips, bloopers and other viral videos on video-sharing sites like YouTube. Or they can release different media clips and let the fans create their own trailers.

Another popular strategy is to use highly visible product tie-ins. The final movie marketing strategy is the publicity stunt, an orchestrated media event where someone does something incredibly silly, dangerous or spectacular to draw further attention to the opening of the movie.

If you are short of money

… well… don’t expect much more than what you could do yourself. Of course, you need to do it yourself! There is absolutely no one else that will have more passion for your film than you. Your idea, blood, sweat, and tears went into this baby.

Apply these 10 ideas into your promotional plan and you will have 10,000+ views in no time.

Capture email addresses.

Now that you have your fancy website, make sure to capture your audience’s email addresses. It keeps the audience in the know with what’s going on with your film, and your fan base is suddenly growing and traceable.

Social Networking.

Create a Facebook fan page and Twitter feed. Encourage your friends, family, and new fans / followers to share it. Sending out milestone cheers like “We’re at 186 fans, help us get to 200!” encourages more active sharing.

The point of Social Networking is creating this open online discussion. A great way of interacting with your network is by holding contests. Connecting it to be relevant to your film is even better. Have a deadline. Have a fair process of picking a winner- either based on awesomeness of their answer or by random (pieces of paper in a hat). Of course, there needs to be a prize. Maybe, a signed poster from the cast or anything else. You’ve got the idea. The best marketing connects the audience with the material. Think of it as a Story.

Say positive or stay silent. If people attack you, ignore them. If they attack you twice, block them from seeing your posts. And don’t look back. A social media voice should primarily be a positive one, I believe. I don’t mean that you can’t be critical, or express disapproval.

Do you want to decrease press interest and the size of your audience? Then include, but fail to utilize, your social links, let your blog or Facebook page lie dormant.

Don’t take your followers for granted. If you do venture into the realm of social media marketing, understand that your relationship with your followers goes both ways. That means you need to respond to their questions and acknowledge their feedback, even if it’s just in the form of a “like” or a “favorite.”

Submit to film festivals.

The best site for finding and submitting to Film Festivals is Withoutabox.com. They have the largest listings for festivals all over the world with submission fees ranging from $0 – 75.

When you get accepted, find out what online movie bloggers, or print columnists are going to that particular festival. Send them an email or press release with links to your movie blog/website letting them know that you and your film will be there. Request a write up, interview that they can use on their blog and you can use as press.

Be sure to email blast your new fan base (you did capture those email addresses on your site, right?) If anyone is near the festival, it’s a great chance for them to finally see the film and for you to meet new people.

Exercise 52. True or False?

1. Digital information cannot be stored on local devices.

2. Simulation is a form of multimedia.

3. Film production has undergone significant changes due to digital media.

4. The 35mm film is always damaged during the distribution process.

5. If George Lucas hadn’t made “Attack Of The Clones” in digital form, he would have had to spend much more time on it.

6. Distribution was the first link to welcome digital technology.

7. Interactivity was absolutely impossible before the introduction of digital media.

8. There hadn’t been any entirely computer generated films before “Final Fantasy”.

9. The stereographer is someone who helps the cinematographer feel comfortable while shooting.
