INTERESTING FACTS

  • The U.S. Department of the Treasury first issued paper U.S. currency in 1862 to make up for the shortage of coins and to finance the Civil War.
  • The first paper notes were printed in denominations of 1 cent, 5 cents, 25 cents, and 50 cents.
  • Coins are usually made of copper and another element, such as zinc or nickel. Currency paper is composed of 25 percent linen and 75 percent cotton.
  • The nickname "greenback" originated as a name for Demand Notes, non-interest notes with green backs issued by the United States in 1861 to finance the Civil War.
  • Martha Washington is the only woman whose portrait has appeared on U.S. paper currency. It appeared on $1 Silver Certificates, Series 1886, 1891, and 1896.
  • «In God We Trust» inscription first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864. Almost a century later, Congress made it the official National Motto, and today its use is required by law on both U.S. coins and paper currency.
  • The American nickel coin is made mostly from copper, not nickel.
  • The US Mint once stamped some gold coins with the legend ‘In Gold We Trust’ instead of ‘In God We Trust’.
  • The dollar sign - $ - is a modification of the figure 8 that

used to be stamped on the old Spanish coins called pieces of eight.
