The Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense

The Present Continuous Tense образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола “to be” в настоящем времени и причастия настоящего времени смыслового глагола:

Краткие ответы: Are you learning English? — Yes, I am. /No, I’m not.

Употребление

The Present Continuous Tense употребляется:

- для выражения длительного незавершенного действия, происходящего в момент речи. Момент речи может быть выражен следующими наречиями или словосочетаниями: now , at present , at the moment и т.д., а может быть ясен из контекста:

What's that smell? Something is burning. —Что это за запах? Что-то горит.

- для выражения длительного действия, совершающегося в настоящий период, не обязательно в момент речи:

Andrew is spending a lot of time in the library these days, as he is writing a book.  — Эндрю в эти дни проводит много времени в библиотеке, т.к. пишет книгу.

 - для выражения будущего события, которое к моменту речи уже запланировано и произойдет в ближайшем будущем (в этом значении часто употребляется Present Continuous глагола to go - I am going , you are going , he is going и т.д. – в сочетании с инфинитивом смыслового глагола):

 They are getting married in June. — Они поженятся в июне.

I am going to spend this summer in the Crimea. – Я собираюсь провести  

это лето в Крыму.

- для выражения непрерывно продолжающегося процесса:

       The Earth is always moving.

- для выражения регулярного действия, которое происходит слишком часто (носит раздражающий характер):

      John is never satisfied. He is always complaining.

     EXERCISES

Exercise 1. Translate the following sentences into Russian. Make them negative and interrogative.

1. They are busy. They are discussing an important question. 2. Listen! Somebody is knocking at the door. 3. Ships are traveling from Saratov to Novgorod in three days. 4. Do you hear anything? – I am listening hard. But I don’t hear anything.

5. Where is Peter? – He is having his English lesson. 6. What are you doing here? – I’m waiting for a friend. 7. It’s snowing again. 8. Look at the man who is sitting at the door. 9. That firm is carrying on negotiations for the purchase of ore. 10. We are going to ship these goods by the next steamer. 11. He is going to be appointed manager of that department. 12. Two huge hydroelectric stations are going to be built on the Volga.

Exercise 2. Read the conversation between Liz and Alex. Put the verbs into the correct form.

Liz: Alex! I’m so glad to see you! What … (you/ do) these days?

Alex: I … (train) to be a supermarket manager.

Liz: Really? … (you/enjoy) it?

Alex: Yes, it’s rather interesting. What about you?

Liz: Well, actually I … (not/work) at the moment. I … (try) to find a job but it’s not easy. Frankly speaking, I am busy with other things now.

Alex: Are you? What … (you/do)?

Liz: I … (get married) soon. I … (look for) a house.

Alex: Indeed? … (you/do) it alone?

Liz: No, some friends of mine and my fiancée … (help) me.

Exercise 4. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English. Use the Present Continuous Tense .

1. Ты можешь поторопиться? Мы ждем тебя. 2. О чем ты говоришь? 3. Я встречу тебя на вокзале. 4. Мир постоянно меняется. 5. Что ты делаешь? Готовишься к экзамену? – Нет. Я не готовлюсь к экзамену. Я просматриваю свой доклад к завтрашнему семинару. 6. Он всегда так шумит, я не могу сосредоточиться. 7. По специальности я – инженер, но сейчас не работаю. 8. В следующем году он заканчивает университет. 9. Она плачет. Что случилось?

10. Ты всегда так громко разговариваешь! Ты можешь говорить тише, хотя бы когда мы на улице?
