A winning Web Page

I. Warm – up

What makes some Internet Web pages better than others? How can you attract people to your Web page, and keep them there for a while?

II. Reading

A) Read the text.

How to make a winning web page?

These days it seems as if everyone has a Web page. Universities, businesses, sport teams, newspapers, celebrities, even many private citizens all have their own sites on the World Wide Web. But just having a page doesn’t guarantee Net surfers will visit, or that they’ll want to stay long. What makes a great Web page? What makes a bad page? Creating a Website requires thought and planning. Here are some tips for designing a winning Web page:

· Keep it simple! Make the page easy to understand and easy to follow. Don't overload the reader with too much information.

· Arrange your Web page in a logical manner. Organization is important!

· Make the pictures easy to recognize, and don't use too many of them. Pictures should not be complicated: it takes extra time to load pictures, and people may not patient enough to wait for the full display to appear on their computer screen.

· Your writing should include short, simple, familiar words. Try not to use lot of computer terminology.

· Try using a familiar image when you design your Web page. Make your page look like something the reader knows. For example, you could make your site look like a book, or a television, or a control panel or a transportation network.

· Limit the number of links, or connections, to other pages that you have for each topic. More than eight links for one topic is probably too many.

· Involve readers in your Web page. Let them do more than just read. Have them enter information or play a game. The key is to get readers interacting with your Web page. Then they'll stay longer!

· Finally, update your page often. Keep your page interesting. If nothing ever changes, no one will come back for another visit.

B) True or False? If the statement is false, change it to a true statement:

1. A single Web page should have a lot of information.

2. Information should be arranged in a logical manner.

3. A good Web page would have lots of pictures.

4. It's important to use a lot of computer terminology in your Web page.

5. It's helpful to make the page look like something the reader already knows.

6. More than eight links for one topic is probably too many.

7. People should just read your page. Don't give them anything else to do.

8. Once you design a Web page, don't change it.

C) We have listened to people discussing whether to launch a Web page. You have read about what makes a “winning” Web page. Now it’s your turn! Work in groups. You will design your own Web page. Answer these questions together before you get started.

1. What is the subject of your Web page? Are you offering a product or a service? What kind of information are you providing?

2. What keywords would people enter to find your page?

3. What links would you include from your Web page to other topics?

4. What pictures would you include on your Web page?

D) Now design your web page. BUT WAIT. You must design your home page without paper and pencil. You can only talk about what your page will look like. What will be in the middle of the page? Where will the pictures be? What writing will be on the page? What will be in each corner?

After you have talked about what the page will look like, each person in the group should draw it individually. Don’t compare your drawings until you have all finished. Does everyone's drawing look the same?
