Text II

Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the modern and rapidly developing towns in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. The distance to Tyumen is 676 km, to Moscow - more than 2,600 km, to St. Petersburg - more than 3,000 km. Khanty-Mansiysk is quite eco-friendly town because there are no large industrial enterprises. The nearest railway station - Pyt-Yakh - is located 248 km from Khanty-Mansiysk. After the opening of a new road through Gornopravdinsk, the nearest railway station is Demyanka, which is located 238 km from the city.

Khanty and Mansi, indigenous peoples of Ugra, gave the name to the Okrug capital. However, not only indigenous ethnic groups live in Khanty-Mansiysk: the town is multinational. In the thirties and forties a new part of the town was built by exiled migrants. That is why now local people call Roznina Street «Perekovka».

The residents of the capital of Ugra are proud of the fact that Khanty-Mansiysk is a town of seven hills like Moscow or Rome. By the way, the number «seven» has a sacral meaning for Ugra indigenous people; so the town on seven hills is considered to be a sacred one.

At present the town is developing rapidly and it is not only a center of oil district, but it is also a center of business activity, great sports, national culture. Modern houses and administrative buildings, nice squares and streets, unique sports grounds, cultural and educational facilities match to majestic nature of Siberia.

Khanty-Mansiysk always glitters and especially in winter when daylight hours are very short. So, before the New Year holidays special festive highlighting appears in the center of the town. However, in other seasons the lights are also burning: thousands of lights make Khm bright and fascinating. Especially it can be seen from the height of, for example, a landing plane.

In summer it is no need to go to Saint-Petersburg, Arkhangelsk or Helsinki in order to see White Nights. This phenomenon can be observed also in Siberia. In summer Khanty-Mansiysk does not dip into total darkness at night; on the contrary, it is almost as bright as in the daytime. This is one more reason for walking along cozy city streets and visiting places of interests.

Khanty-Mansiysk has its own unique features: it has a lot of plants and trees, it is surrounded by forests and a wandering bank of the Irtysh River and it has its specific architecture. The small town has a great history and great perspectives.
